Time To Change

A young chap has uploaded a video wherein he moans about the way his life is going, and declares that he will start doing things differently - and he is encouraging others to join him.

It's a terribly boring video but I had to laugh at this bit. I know they are just Christian cliches, but he really is setting himself up for ridicule.

And then there's this bit:

So what did Jesus stand for?

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple (Luke 14:26)

I came not to send peace, but a sword. (Matthew 10:34)

Take therefore no thought for the morrow (Matthew 6:34)

Sell that ye have and give alms (Luke 12:33)

Let the dead bury the dead (Luke 9:60)

Not even the very devout Christians try to follow those teachings. Instead they call on the apologists to reinterpret the texts until they are saying something quite different.

Will Technology Destroy Mankind Or Make Him Godlike?

We are fast approaching an event unprecedented in the history of human civilization. A tipping point known as the "Technological Singularity". When this happens, the world will change forever, a new chapter in human history will begin. In physics, a singularity is a point where gravity is so intense that even space and time begin to break down. Like the Big Bang or a black hole. But it also refers to a time when computer power grows without limit, surpassing human intelligence, sweeping aside everything in its path.

Computers, biotechnology, robotics and nanotechnology are self-accelerating; that is, the products of their own processes enable them to develop ever more rapidly. Within a few decades, machine intelligence could surpass human intelligence, leading to The Singularity. A technological change so rapid and profound it represents a rupture in the fabric of human history.

It may be 50 years away it may be a thousand, but most scientists agree, a Technological Singularity is inevitable. The fear is, if it's uncontrolled, the results could be catastrophic for the human race. Will we survive our technology, and if we do, will humans eventually become godlike?

Is a Technological Singularity on the horizon? Could nanotechnology be the technological vehicle that makes smarter than human computers possible? And if so, will this change the human race as a species forever?

Within the coming decades we will be able to create AIs with greater than human intelligence, bio-engineer our species and re-design matter through nanotechnology. How will these technologies change what it means to be human? Is it possible that human beings will increase their brain power and intelligence by direct brain-computer interfaces and biological augmentation of the human brain?

What will be the social, cultural and religious impact and implications of these future technologies? Serious thinkers in the science community are wowed by the techno-utopia promises of transcending our biology, merging with our machines, and creating greater than human intelligence.

What will the future hold for mankind? Only time will tell. But we must remember that the same technologies that could make us godlike, also have the potential to destroy the human race. I for one, envision a future technological utopia, where man has become godlike.

He talks about whether its acceptance is growing. He debates to what extent massage therapy and aromatherapy are examples of CAM. He reveals whether he likes to refer to CAM as (S)CAM, and how helpful such an acronym is. He explores to what extent traditional medicine and herbal medicine are science-based, resulting in aspirin, digitalis, and various chemotherapy drugs, and why they should not properly be considered CAM. He describes the health freedom movement, and what social criticism fuels it. He talks about the ways that adopting CAM approaches harm patients, including leading to patents to forgo other, more effective treatments; paternalistic deception of the patient through knowing use of placebo. He explores the moral values that motivate skeptical activism. And he talks about why more medical doctors are not skeptic activists.

He talks about his training as a detective and why it was formative, along with his background in magic. He explains why field experience is so important to scientific paranormal investigation. He distinguishes between skepticism and debunking, and what results from each approach. He argues that the existence of the paranormal is not the only question to answer while conducting paranormal investigations. He explains why he continues investigating subjects he has already looked numerous times, such as ghosts, lake monsters and miracle claims, and why he spends time on the paranormal as opposed to other important topics. He talks about whether the supernatural claim that God exists should be a focus of the paranormal investigator. And he comments on the new trend of skeptical paranormal investigation groups starting up in cities throughout North America.

Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus

Quote

It's the poem about Jesus versus "religion" that's lighting up the blogosphere at a dizzying pace.

"Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus" by spoken-word artist Jefferson Bethke has received more than 15 million YouTube views as of Saturday night since it was posted just four days ago, eliciting more than 100,000 YouTube comments and plenty of debate elsewhere on the Internet.

Why all the hubbub? Its message—which Bethke wrote "to highlight the difference between Jesus and false religion," according to its YouTube entry—is striking a chord with viewers. Love it or hate it or something in between, it seems impossible to not have an opinion about the controversial, hip-hop styled clip.

[Story]

The view count on YouTube is over 18 million views as of the time of this post and comments have been disabled by the uploader. I presume because of all the controversy. Here is the controversial video:

I found the poem to be pretty much a load of bullshit. The Amazing Atheist, a prominent YouTube atheist, has this to say about it. I like this guys style. Here is his video rebuttal to Bethke's "Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus" video.

The co-host has got it arse about face. It's not the atheists who think like that, it's the Christians. Those among them who think that Jesus is about to return will say things like "Cut down all the trees. Use up all the oil. It doesn't matter because we're not going to be here for much longer anyway."

Do Atheists Need a Temple?

Quote

Philosopher and author Alain de Botton has called for a series of "temples for atheists" to be built around Britain, allowing the non-religious to have impressive buildings to call their own.

De Botton's most recent book, Religion for Atheists, calls for unbelievers to copy the major religions and build grand architectural masterpieces to inspire a sense of perspective in people. He argues that a temple doesn't need to be dedicated to a religion: "You can build a temple to anything that's positive and good. That could mean: a temple to love, friendship, calm or perspective".

He added: "Why should religious people have the most beautiful buildings in the land? It's time atheists had their own versions of the great churches and cathedrals. A beautiful building is an indispensable part of getting your message across. Books alone won't do it."

Putting his money where his mouth is, De Botton has begun work on just such a temple. The first has been designed by Tom Greenall Architects and Jordan Hodgson, and is a concept for a 46-metre-tall black tower, sat in the City of London. The height is symbolic of the 4.6 billion-year age of the Earth, and right at the bottom will be a millimeter thick band of gold that represents humanity's brief existence within that life.

"Even the most convinced atheists tend to speak nicely about religious buildings," said De Botton. "They may even feel sad that nothing like them gets built nowadays. But there's no need to feel nostalgic. Why not just learn from religions and build similarly beautiful and interesting things right now?"

He insists he has no ambitions to set up an alternative religion. “Religions are hierarchical, structured,” he says, while his project is “all about thinking for yourself and not having a central authority”. Would people pray in the temple? “No, no. People would probably behave as they would in a museum.”

The idea hasn’t gone down that well with Richard Dawkins author of the, "God Delusion". “Atheists don’t need temples,” he said when asked. Arguing that the money would be better spent on secular education, such as building non-religious schools which teach rational, skeptical, critical thinking.

I can't see the point of building a temple to atheism at all. De Botton doesn't plan to build just one temple to atheism but a series of secular temples. More than half the money has reportedly already been raised for the first temple. Personally, I can't help thinking there is something misconceived about the project. I have to disagree with De Botton, atheists don't need no stinking temples!

Quote

What is a bright?
* A bright is a person who has a naturalistic worldview.
* A bright's worldview is free of supernatural and mystical elements.
* The ethics and actions of a bright are based on a naturalistic worldview.

The bright movement's three major aims are:

A. Promote the civic understanding and acknowledgment of the naturalistic worldview, which is free of supernatural and mystical elements.
B. Gain public recognition that persons who hold such a worldview can bring principled actions to bear on matters of civic importance.
C. Educate society toward accepting the full and equitable civic participation of all such individuals.

Reason and Purpose:

Currently the naturalistic worldview is insufficiently expressed within most cultures, even politically/socially repressed. To be a Bright is to participate in a movement to address the situation.

There is a great diversity of persons who have a naturalistic worldview (free of supernatural and mystical elements). Some are members of existing organizations that foster a supernatural-free perspective. Far more individuals are not associated with any formal group or label. Under the broad umbrella of the naturalistic worldview, the constituency of Brights can undertake social and civic actions designed to influence a society otherwise permeated with super-naturalism.

The website of The Bright's Network registers brights into an Internet constituency of Brights and serves as a communications hub for actions that align with the aims and principles of the Brights movement.

Can Brights impact society's outlook regarding the naturalistic worldview and the people who hold it? That remains to be seen, but if you are intrigued by the possibilities, you are invited to explore the Web site, learn more about the Brights movement and, if your worldview fits the definition, then register as a Bright.

It takes numbers for social change. Not registered as a Bright yet? You can register here.

Leading Intelligent Design Think Tank Opposes Creationism

Quote

INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 31, 2012 -- /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A bill approved today by the Indiana Senate to allow the teaching of creationism in public schools is being criticized as bad science education by Discovery Institute, the nation's leading intelligent design think tank.

"Instead of injecting religion into biology classes, legislators should be working to promote the inclusion of more science," said Joshua Youngkin, a law and policy analyst at Discovery Institute's Center for Science & Culture. "There are plenty of scientific criticisms of Darwin's theory today, and science students should be able to hear about them, not about religion."

For more information on teaching the scientific controversy over evolution without bringing religion into the classroom and violating the First Amendment, contact Discovery Institute at (206) 292-0401 x107. For Discovery Institute's complete science education policy go to: Discovery Institute Polices

.
[Full Story]

It has always been the policy of the Discovery Institute to promote and inject Intelligent Design in to America's classrooms. Intelligent Design is really nothing more than Creationism without the reference to God. Intelligent Design teaches that certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an Intelligent Designer. Which is the same thing as saying God.

The reason the Discovery Institute is against the bill approved by the Indiana Senate is, that they don't want their Theory of Intelligent Design to be associated with Creationism. They believe that Creationism's connection to religion, and attempts to mandate it's teaching in public classrooms, only politicizes it. They don't want to bring religion in to it because it violates the First Amendment. The theory of Intelligent Design has already been put on trial and discredited in the landmark federal case Kitzmiller v. Dover School District.

The Discovery Institute's official policy on teaching Intelligent Design is:

Quote

As a matter of public policy, Discovery Institute opposes any effort to require the teaching of intelligent design by school districts or state boards of education. Attempts to mandate teaching about intelligent design only politicize the theory and will hinder fair and open discussion of the merits of the theory among scholars and within the scientific community. Furthermore, most teachers at the present time do not know enough about intelligent design to teach about it accurately and objectively.

Instead of mandating intelligent design, Discovery Institute seeks to increase the coverage of evolution in textbooks. It believes that evolution should be fully and completely presented to students, and they should learn more about evolutionary theory, including its unresolved issues. In other words, evolution should be taught as a scientific theory that is open to critical scrutiny, not as a sacred dogma that can't be questioned.

Discovery Institute believes that a curriculum that aims to provide students with an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of neo-Darwinian and chemical evolutionary theories (rather than teaching an alternative theory, such as intelligent design) represents a common ground approach that all reasonable citizens can agree on.

Although Discovery Institute does not advocate requiring the teaching of intelligent design in public schools, it does believe there is nothing unconstitutional about voluntarily discussing the scientific theory of design in the classroom.

So the Discovery Institute is distancing Intelligent Design from Creationism because of all its religious baggage. Interesting. They know that attempts to mandate the teaching of either ID or Creationism in public classrooms will lead to failure in court; because they violate the First Amendment. They believe that student's should be exposed to, and teacher's should be able to present for voluntary discussion, both theories. I don't see how they can accomplish this without violating the First Amendment.

“ADOPT AN ATHEIST” CAMPAIGN BEGINS

Quote

Catholic League president Bill Donohue explains why the Catholic League is starting a new initiative aimed at atheists: Approximately 80 percent of Americans are Christian, and 96 percent celebrate Christmas. Of the 20 percent who are not Christian, non-believers make up the largest segment, though the number of self-identified atheists is tiny. David Silverman, president of American Atheists, knows this to be true, which is why he is frantically trying to inflate his base. “We want people to realize that there may be atheists in their family,” he told the New York Times, “even if those atheists don’t even know they are atheists.”

We think there is some merit in David’s idea, even if he has things backwards, as usual. Today we are launching our “Adopt An Atheist” campaign, the predicate of which is, “We want atheists to realize that there may be Christians in their community, even if those Christians don’t even know they are Christian.”

Here’s what our campaign entails. We are asking everyone to contact the American Atheist affiliate in his area [click here], letting them know of your interest in “adopting” one of them. All it takes is an e-mail. Let them know of your sincere interest in working with them to uncover their inner self. They may be resistant at first, but eventually they may come to understand that they were Christian all along.

If we hurry, these closeted Christians can celebrate Christmas like the rest of us. As an added bonus, they will no longer be looked upon as people who “believe in nothing, stand for nothing and are good for nothing.”

Bo Muller-Moore sells $25 hand-stenciled "Eat More Kale" T-shirts that he cranks out one at a time in his Vermont home, and this has ruffled the feathers of Chick-fil-A.

The fast-food chain, which rang up $3.5 billion in sales in 2010, is trying to put Muller-Moore out of business—for the second time in five years. Chick-fil-A, which is second only to king-of-the-fast-food-coop KFC, considers him a threat to the brand.

Chick-fil-A says Muller-Moore's T-shirt business, founded in 2000, infringes on its trademarked slogan "Eat Mor Chikin." It's a [deliberately-misspelled] advertising campaign the Atlanta-based chain launched in 1995 and, according to the company website, changed the burger-eating landscape forever. The message "reaches millions—on television, radio, the Internet, and the occasional water tower," explains the website. (The closest Chick-fil-A to Vermont is in Nashua, N.H., more than 120 miles away.)

Chick-fil-A first came after Muller-Moore in 2006, with a letter demanding that the artist—who also posts screenprinting instructional videos at eatmorekale.com—cease and desist from printing T-shirts and send Chick-fil-A any inventory.

"Man, it knocked the wind out of me," Muller-Moore, 39, told the Burlington Free Press. "I make my living as a foster parent. At the time, I had one small child. I now have two of my own. My business has grown every year. I'm certainly not getting rich. I can't live on it. It's the foster parenting gig that pays the bills, but that said, the business is growing every year. I'm in it for the long haul."

Muller-Moore applied to the Vermont Arts Council for free legal help, and a lawyer wrote some letters on his behalf. It seemed Chick-fil-A backed down. But then in August Muller-Moore applied for a U.S. trademark for "Eat More Kale" to use the phrase on a range of clothing and stickers.

Chick-fil-A cried fowl. In October of 2011 the company's lawyers sent a letter to Muller-Moore, noting that the company owns numerous U.S. and international trademarks and copyrights for both "Eat Mor Chikin" and for cows holding sandwich-boards reading "Eat Mor Chikin."

"Your client's Eat More Kale Mark plays off of and imitates Chick-fil-A's valuable 'Eat Mor Chikin' Intellectual Property by using a prefix confusingly similar to Chick-fil-A's federally-registered 'Eat Mor Chikin' trademarks," Chick-Fil-A's lawyer wrote to Muller-Moore's, according to the Free Press. "Your client's misappropriation of Chick-fil-A's 'Eat Mor Chikin' intellectual property, to play off of and benefit from the extraordinary fame and goodwill of Chick-fil-A's trademarks, copyrights and popular promotional campaign, is likely to cause confusion of the public and dilutes the distinctiveness of Chick-fil-A's intellectual property and diminishes its value. Such actions constitute trademark infringement, dilution and unfair competition in violation of federal and state law."

The six-page letter notes that Chick-fil-A has successfully defended against 30 other "Eat More" phrases, including "Eat More Goat" and "Eat More Beer," and says the chicken chain has won lawsuits against Burger King Corp. and others. (In 2000, Chick-fil-A objected to a Burger King ad where animated poultry from the film Chicken Run held up signs reading "Save the Chickens: Eat a Whopper.")

The letter asks that Muller-Moore abandon his trademark application, "cease and forever desist" all plans to use the phrase "Eat More Kale" for his business—and transfer the eatmorekale.com domain name to Chick-fil-A. (It says the chicken chain would not object to Muller-Moore using "Eat Kale" or eatkale.com.")

Muller-Moore's lawyer has fired off a five-page response, which observes that no one is likely to confuse the two slogans.

"My client's phrase shares only six out of twelve of the same letters as your client's phrase and none of the imagery or conceits," Richardson writes. "My client has no cow designs which appear in conjunction with the phrase 'Eat More Kale.'"

Whether one is likely to be confused with the other may be less at issue than whether Chick-fil-A can be seen to be lax in its defense of its own trademarks.

Big Mountain Jesus Statue on Federal Land

A Jesus-brand religious statue on top of a hill in Montana is on federal land and thus clearly and undeniably is a case of government endorsement of a specific brand of religion and therefore a violation of the well known establishment clause of the US Constitution.

Quote

The Big Mountain Jesus statue will be the focus of a congressional committee hearing scheduled on Friday by Montana Congressman Denny Rehberg.
Rehberg, a Republican, is proposing legislation that would allow a land exchange between the Whitefish Mountain Resort and the Flathead National Forest centered on the 625-square-foot parcel of federal land near the top of Chair 2. The exchange would allow the statue to remain at that location.

In the past courts have sometimes pointed out that these land swap deals are yet another case of illegal activity, as they are a transparent attempt to pretend the government is not promoting stupidity.

You Tube is bloody useless!

The "Russia Today" channel has more than 15,000 news items, so I decided to browse through the earlier stories.

I was on page 1, so I went up to the URL and changed it to page 100, and this is what I got:

Georgia Mom Arrested For Letting Child Get Tattoo

A mother in the US state of Georgia has been arrested after she allowed her 10 year old son to get a tattoo. The tattoo, intended to memorialize the boys late brother, was done in Georgia.

In Georgia it is against the law for anyone other than certain medical professionals to apply any tattoo to any person under 18 years old.

The mother was moved by her son's desire to pay tribute to his brother, who died suddenly at 12 years old.

Quote

A Georgia mother who was arrested for allowing her 10-year-old to get a tattoo said she had no idea it was illegal for him to get one, even with her consent.
When Chuntera Napier's son Gaquan Napier asked her if he could get a memorial tattoo for his 12-year-old brother Malik who died after being hit by a car, Napier was touched by the request.

(source)

After a first glance at this headline I was prepared to castigate this mother, but after reading the specific reason the surviving child wanted the tattoo I thought a very wide tolerance was appropriate, given what the family has already suffered. If the idea of getting this tattoo was going to help this boy cope with the loss of his brother that should be a consideration in the way this matter is handled.

The tattoo artist is a different matter. It is his responsibility to know and follow the laws that apply to his trade. What should have happened is that the tattoo artist should have kindly and compassionately explained the law to the mother and then no crime would have been committed.

I think justice would be served if the charges against this mother were dropped while the tattoo artist is guaranteed a fair and just trial if it is found that a crime has taken place.

Do you think the state should outlaw tattoos for folks under 18?

Do you think this mother should be prosecuted?

Should the tattoo artist be prosecuted?

Geek Hill Offline for Main Power Panel R/R

Online services provided directly at Geek Hill, such as the cams at Geek Webcams, are temporarily shut down on Tuesday 1/31/2012 as our electrician finally gets ready to replace the main electrical panel. This job has been delayed a number of times, we are really hoping it gets finished today.

The power to the main house will be off for hours. In the meantime we will be powering our original koi pond and our new baby koi pond pump motors using a gasoline powered generator, this is important so that the fish do not die.

I will have backup Internet access via my iPad 3G modem and my iPhone.

Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich Promote Marital Fidelity

Republican juggernauts Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich have combined their expertise in Family Values, Traditional Marriage, and Christian ethics to form the holiest subset of Republican voters - the we'll vote for anybody faction.

Newt, who is opposed to same sex marriage on moral grounds, is a paragon of Christian virtue and has only cheated on 67% of his wives as far as we know right now. Newt also has only ever hounded one President over sex scandals while cheating on his own wife. Herman Cain, of course, is famous for the number of women that come forward and testify to his moral standards.

So when Herman Cain announced his support for Newt he was promoting Republican Candidate Values.
