An Indonesian civil servant who declared himself an atheist on Facebook was arrested and is now facing jail for blasphemy after being attacked by an angry mob, police said on Friday.

Islam is another manifestation of Middle Eastern Monotheism Disorder, a condition that primarily affects Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Some consider Middle Eastern Monotheism Disorder to be a voluntary illness while others insist it arises from an evolutionary trait that was once very useful. Like a toddler outgrows her blankie most people transitioning from adolescent to adult go through a phase in which they question everything (thank if there was one god). The rate of spontaneous remission from Middle Eastern Monotheism Disorder in recent years is very encouraging, but at the same time all around our planet stupidity is trying to make a comeback.

The government people get is no better than the worst government they are willing to tolerate. Humans need to expect and get better results from their government, and I definitely mean to include my own. But this crap, jail for being an atheist, it almost sounds like a Newt Gingrich Presidency.

"It almost sounds like a Newt Gingrich Presidency."

Seeing those words sent a shiver down my spine.

If Newtie or Mittie or Rantorum wins the White House, life in the US will change dramatically. Here are a few changes that we can expect:

The King James Version of the Bible will become the only authorized textbook for high school science, history and literature classes. It will become the only legal textbook in the nation’s law schools. OT law and jeebus’s teachings will become the law of the land. (However, reconciling these two contradictory philosophies will require years of legal staff work. In the meantime, OT law will prevail.) Gays, disobedient children and unfaithful wives will be executed.

The word “tax” will become obsolete, to be replaced by “tithing,” a bit of an oxymoron since tithing will be mandatory. Instead of taxes, each of us will pay a flat percentage of our income into two government accounts: “Corporate” and “Religious.” Proceeds from the Corporate account will go directly into the treasuries of our beloved corporations, pro rated according to the amount of the companies' donations to the new Christopublican Party. Money in the Religious account will be allocated to evangelical and catholic churches. (Of course, if Mittie wins, the Mormons will also get a cut of the take.)

Suharto kept the religious freaks under control, but as soon as he was ousted, the Muslims took over - and I have a feeling Indonesia is going to be like this for another thousand years.

As a matter of interest:
Last person jailed for blasphemy in England - 1922.
Last person prosecuted for blasphemy in England - 1971 (suspended jail term)

Few things in life are perfect, but blasphemy is a perfect example of a victimless crime.

Okay, someone has to bring this up, and I guess it has to be me.

Indonesian police ripped poor Alexander from the arms of a street mob, and stuffed him in a jail cell. Oppression, or protection?

If they pulled him away from a mob only to arrest him for blasphemy then, despite their intentions the police have oppressed him somewhat.

However being ripped to shreds by an angry mob of credible meat bags is certainly a much less desirable alternative.

I guess arresting him likely did save his life, and that is good.

The Indonesian Constitution has guaranteed freedom of religion for its citizens.

But only six religions are recognised by the Government

I'm not sure of the details regarding Indonesian Identity cards, but I've heard that each citizen must include one of the six religions on the application form.

Atheism is not on the list, so no identity cards for atheists - which makes it hard for them to get work, enter into contracts, etcetera.

Blasphemy is illegal

[So I'm going with oppression]

In Indonesia blasphemy is a punishable crime carrying a maximum five-year prison term.

What a load of crap. Thank goodness I don't live there.
