Mao Sugiyama Cooks, Serves Own Genitals At Banquet In Tokyo

The Huffington Post | May 24, 2012

This chef's got balls.

Mao Sugiyama, a self-described "asexual" from Tokyo, cooked up, seasoned and served his own genitalia to five diners at a swanky banquet in Japan last month, Calorie Lab reported.

In most cases, "asexual" is a word used to describe a person who is non-sexual. Sugiyama, however, embraces it as a way to show that he does not affiliate with either gender.

Sugiyama sparked a firestorm of interest on April 8 with one tweet:

"[Please retweet] I am offering my male genitals (full penis, testes, scrotum) as a meal for 100,000 yen …Will prepare and cook as the buyer requests, at his chosen location."

Just days after Sugiyama's 22nd birthday, the artist underwent elective genital-removal surgery, divvied up the severed penis shaft, testicles, and scrotal skin between five people, and garnished it with button mushrooms and Italian parsley.

On April 13, five of six diners who signed up for the $250-a-plate feast, sat down to dinner. The sixth person was a no-show.

The next day, an organizer posted a blog -- subsequently deleted -- containing pictures of the event. Images showed dozens of people who attended the event just to catch a glimpse of the rare treat.

The extra diners were served crocodile-based dishes while Sugiyama cooked up the exclusive meal.

The story went viral in Japan. Some showed even more interest, while others complained. But Calorie Lab called Japanese authorities, who deemed the banquet legal because there is no law against cannibalism in the country.

I was absolutely flabbergasted and incredulous after reading this story on Huff Post. As a man who appreciates his penis and could never fathom parting with it (under any circumstances), I could barely wrap my poor wee brain around it to be honest.

I actually found it painful, mentally, to read the article. My mind kept saying ouch!....ouch!...OUCH!!!

What? There's no law against cannibalism in Japan? Really?? I may be uninformed on cannibalism laws on a country to country basis, but I thought cannibalism was outlawed globally.

Obviously this is not the case everywhere. Now, just because something isn't against the law doesn't make it right. Personally, this exotic meal just feels wrong. My mind shy's away from it, while laboring to grasp the visual of a Chef serving his own genitals at a banquet.

I suppose being asexual, Mao Sugiyama felt his genitalia were superfluous and felt no real loss. And while I respect his decision to do with his body as he wishes, it's the meal aspect that boggles my mind. I mean really, human male genitalia may taste fine and all, but I''ll stick with Mexican food thanks. :smt028

Bon appetit! :chef:

Cancer of the penis. But otherwise, yeah.

Incidentally, penile cancer is one of the reasons given ex post facto for routine male genital mutilation circumcision. Still, I would have liked to have been consulted first. This excuse makes no sense anyway. Do we routinely amputate girls' breasts preemptively to prevent breast cancer? Yet, penile cancer is one of the rarest of all cancers, and breast cancer is one of the most common.

(The original modern reason, believe it or not, was to prevent masturbation. It seems that the men were desperate to save their sons from masturbation's deleterious consequences, never noticing that they themselves seemed to have escaped those dire effects. One person got the brilliant idea to ask a rabbi if Jewish boys ever masturbated, and of course, the rabbi answered, "Uh, no, er, NO! Whatever gave you that idea? No! Never! Uh, excuse me..."

It didn't take long for people to notice that boys were still pulling it. Sure, it didn't feel as good, but they weren't doing it any less. That's when the medical industry had to invent all these other excuses to maintain this guaranteed source of income. For example, it's easier to clean a mutilated cut penis. Imagine if they applied that reasoning to fingernails or behind the ears.)

I'm having trouble thinking of a good reason for making it illegal if the person being eaten gives fully informed consent. "It just feels wrong" isn't a good reason, because it can be used to ban things like dancing or gay sex or picking up sticks on Saturday. Perhaps preventing the spread of certain diseases could serve as a justification. The prion-based disease kuru (akin to mad cow disease) was transmitted by eating the brains of one's departed loved ones, a cultural tradition in parts of New Guinea.

On the other hand, I cannot assert that Mao Sugiyama doesn't belong in a mental institution.

I can't think of a good reason either. I honestly thought cannibalism was illegal in most countries. However, the only ban against it in most countries, seems to be for moral or ethical reasons, not legal reasons.

According to the cannibalism wiki, Cannibalism is rare and is not illegal in most countries.

Cannibalism has a long and rich history among the human species. It can be traced as far back as prehistoric man. Interesting stuff.

Agreed, that would be a bad reason to make anything illegal.

That might indeed be a good reason to make cannibalism illegal.

Nor can I.
