Cenk Uygur called it "emotional porn."  The Guardian called it "relentless exploitation of genuine grief".  I found it utterly disgusting, blatantly manipulative, and more than I could bear to watch for more than a few minutes.  The 2016 Republican Convention, scripted by our future führer, was nothing but appeals to base instincts, the lizard brain, with seemingly more fear mongering than you'll get in an average church in a year.

As Cousin Ricky posted elsewhere, this barrel has no bottom.   It's an infinite pit of well fed ignorance and appeals for knee jerk reactions.

It is so disgusting, so calculatedly evil, that I don't see how they can lose in November.   When your appeal is based on expert knowledge of the most tragic weaknesses in human nature, you have a very powerful tool that can do tremendous harm or good.  Those waging this psych war on US muggles have no reluctance to use any means.   We're staring directly into the face of evil.

The humans were sucking it up as fast as their oppressors could dish it out.  Wonderful hatred, xenophobia so pure you'd think it came from God.  Intolerance enshrined as the highest expression of human nature.

Shillary needs to push hard to encourage people to use their cerebellum when making political decisions.

Emotive and lacking substance, from the little I've watched.

What strikes me (from the UK) are the people who's reputation this has destroyed in my eyes. Among that lot, Mr Geo W Bush (43) looks bright, thoughtful and competent. Neither Bush43 nor Bush41 endorses Trump. Interesting that it is the Rep party in the USA and Labour in the UK which seem in danger of imploding or dividing into two parties through divisions and divisive leaders. (Thank goodness our problem is only Corbyn and not Trump!)

There has been much talk of right-wing and populist movements in the USA and in Europe but these don't seem to me to be linked. They need to be seen in their national and cultural contexts.

Well said!

I hate to be so cliche, but it is like watching Hitler's rise to power.  And we sure know how he was able to fire up the people into a mindless frenzy.

I really have this feeling deep in the pit of my stomach that Dump will be elected. For him not to be elected somebody or something would have to be able to make more people actually be able to think and I don't imagine that it is a possibility.  We seem to just keep slipping more and more into the Abyss of Stupid.

Pardon me for plagiarizing Scarlett O'Hara.  " I can't think about this right now. If I do I'll go crazy."

Safes, who needs a safe. I think Dump means we need to Make American Save Again, or Make American Slaves Again.

I'm looking forward to the next catch phrase from the Dumpence camp.

I love the Onion and honestly, Ungodly, "Still better than a Nazi".....oh Crikey.

I feel like I woke up in 1930's Germany. Here's an interesting article from the Huff Post. It's going to be increasingly difficult to maintain a sense of humor during the next 4 years.

http://www.huffingto...b_11084210.html

As a Jew, I don’t like people making Hitler comparisons. I don’t like when they do it to President Obama. I didn’t like when people did it to President Bush. There was only one Hitler, and we have not had a politician who rose to that level — yet.

That said, a chill went down my spine when I saw private remarks from Chris Christie, regarding one of Donald Trump’s first moves, if he is elected.Reuters reports:

If he wins the presidency, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump would seek to purge the federal government of officials appointed by Democratic President Barack Obama and could ask Congress to pass legislation making it easier to fire public workers, Trump ally, Chris Christie, said on Tuesday.

Why is this scary? It is literally one of the first moves made by Adolf Hitler, upon democratically attaining power.

The Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service was passed just two months after Hitler became Chancellor of Germany.

It was such a major piece of his plan to ultimately become dictator, that the Holocaust Museum notes it on their timeline of events:

The German government issues the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service (Gesetz zur Wiederherstellung des Berufsbeamtentums), which excludes Jews and other political opponents of the Nazis from all civil service positions.

Gutting government of any civil service officers who are not completely and blindly loyal to the new leader usually is one of the first moves of someone looking to become a dictator. Another act is one Trump previously voiced support for - tighter control over a free press.

Whether dictatorship is the overt intent of Donald Trump or not, what cannot be denied is that a move like this runs completely counter to the very idea of our Republic, whose very Constitution goes to very, very great lengths to prevent usurping of that kind of power.

Whether it is Saddam, or Stalin, going after the bureaucracy, purging it, and installing loyalists is almost always a first step for a rising dictator.

Apparently, that has not gone unnoticed by Trump, who openly admiresVladimir Putin, Kim Jong-un and Saddam Hussein.

This is not hyperbole.

This is not a joke.

This is real.

Donald Trump’s man in charge of putting together a government seriously just said that one of Donald Trump’s first moves will be the same as one of Hitler’s.

Conservatives often talk a big game about the Constitution, about fighting tyranny.

Now that Donald Trump’s plans are transparent, we’ll see just how serious they are about that.

His statements back in March make it clear that Trump is as bad as Hitler:

(edit: I mean as bad as Hitler in 1933 NOT 1945)

On March 3:

In G.O.P. debate: “We should go tougher than waterboarding.” Pressed about whether military officers would carry out orders like killing terrorists’ family members, a violation of the Geneva Conventions, Trump replied, “If I say ‘do it,’ they’re going to do it.”

On March 4, after being told it was against the law to do such things  he did some back-pedalling (apparently to "prove" that he was a law-abiding citizen) when he said:

“I will not order a military officer to disobey the law. It is clear that as president I will be bound by laws just like all Americans, and I will meet those responsibilities.”

But the very next day:

“As far as the waterboarding is concerned, we have to stay within the laws … We’re like a bunch of babies — but we’re gonna stay within the laws. But you know what we’re gonna do? We’re gonna have those laws broadened.”

http://www.nytimes.c...ging-views.html

There is no way to put a positive spin on those statements. Trump is an arsehole and that's all there is to it. He wasn't just saying he was going to torture and kill terrorists, but that he was going to kill their families as well. That's biblical punishment, that is ... it's right there in the Ten Commandments: I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation

(Exodus 20:5)

The other thing that totally stunned me back in March was that it wasn't just some old man shouting at the clouds; it was the Republican's leading contender for president of the USA ! And the crowds cheered when he said those things!

The email scandal is highly disturbing, but Benghazi is a total red herring. How many times have Rethuglicans investigated Benghazi and come up with nothing? Nine or ten times, I think? Yet, they are still outright lying to their base and saying that Hillary murdered a bunch of people.

I don't have any illusions about Hillary, but I'd vote for her any day over a real life Godwin's law (if I had a vote).

Oh boy! I know I can come here for a good laugh in the morning.

But then I start to sink back into a depression (well it's not really that bad YET) but honestly I do wonder how long I can "laugh" my way through all of this.

Joe Bloe I do agree he is like Hitler in 1933, Dumpster has to work his way up to the later version, but with enough insane Umerikans behind him. anything could happen.

CNN today: "Donald Trump comes out of his convention ahead of Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House, topping her 44% to 39% in a four-way matchup including Gary Johnson (9%) and Jill Stein (3%) and by three points in a two-way head-to-head, 48% to 45%. That latter finding represents a 6-point convention bounce for Trump, which are traditionally measured in two-way matchups."
Apparently, there really could be a President Trump. The problem doesn't appear to be Trump's brilliance but the corruption and terrible reputation of establishment politicians.

Guardian 2015: "Merkeln’, which means being indecisive or failing to have an opinion, ...."unquote.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but one reason Hillary seems to be having difficulty trumping Trump is that Germans seem to understand and appreciate consensus politics while USAmericans, for various reasons, don't value it. Two reasons are: (1) having an ideology is still acceptable. It's seen as inevitable, universal, or even considered a good thing in the USA and (2) many people see politics in terms of winners and losers.

While Europeans might disagree strongly with Camerons, Merkels etc, their integrity and honesty isn't seriously in doubt. There's a long list of British political scandals, but they are kept in context and proportion by most of the electorate. The UK scandals also seem to have resulted in politicians being discredited and prosecuted. In the USA, the corruption seems more ongoing, less solvable and has discredited all establishment politicians collectively.

Over here (UK), people are starting to notice the problem caused by talking about politicians as if they are all liars and cheats. Call someone charlatan enough and you get the Rifkind effect...
https://www.theguard...ind-straw-video (source)
Mr "nobody pays me a salary" MP Rifkind was a highly respected constituency MP for decades, but appears to have ended his career in a cynical and embittered frame of mind - even though his party was in government.

And from:
http://news.atheists...-is-a-disaster/
"In his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention Thursday, July 21, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump pledged to end the long-standing ban on churches engaging in political activities."

I live in a little one horse town and I haven't even seen the horse lately, but anyway, yesterday coming home from grocery shopping in the next town, (we don't have a grocery store anymore) we were sitting behind a crappy old rust bucket pick-up truck that was apparently being held together with various NRA stickers and of course, big surprise..a Drump bumper sticker. PERFECT! I should have taken a picture.

I want some of the "You know he's nuts stickers" and if I see anymore Trump supporters I can stick one of these on their rig.
