In days gone by when the average guy on the street was not very well educated it was trivial for authoritarian religious organizations to declare themselves as the sole source of information about anything related to cosmology or any other branch of science.

Heretics who dared challenge religious conventions over matters of fact were simply put to death, or otherwise silenced.  The priests had all the answers and you were required to agree.

Then came science and the education of the masses.  As people learned explanations of our world that were not only rational but also demonstrably true, the more primitive notions of religions are either exposed as false or deprecated as no longer required, since a more logical explanation is now available.

Even in Ireland the number of people afflicted with religious delusions is going down.  Worldwide ancient religions are in decline.

Science does have a better explanation, and if bits of what we believe today are found not to be true science will gladly accept a more accurate way of perceiving the reality that waits patiently to be discovered.

The arc of history does bend toward justice, especially as we improve our ability to understand the reality in which we all exist.

It's all good.

Maybe.  In the long run, probably.  In the short run -- not so much.  My response is subjective rather than objective.  I know this.  Still, my sense of optimism is being replaced by dread.

Around the world the fundamentalists (of all religions) are interfering with the education system. They'll never give up. I hate to think what happens if they ever get back into power.

Throughout history, it is not rationality and Atheism that have held the madness of religion in check.  It has been other religions.

Islam might well have taken over the world, except for Christianity.

In modern Iraq, the greatest threat to a Shia Mosque is Sunni Islam.

In the West, the greatest impediment to the HRCC has been the Protestant churches.

The world may never be sane.  At least we have a balance of madness.
