As the leader of the free world, Germany has lagged embarrassingly behind western Europe and North America in the gay rights department. In a shrewd political maneuver, Chancellor Angela Merkel has changed that.

Merkel, reading the sentiment in her own party and the general public, has allowed a vote in the Bundestag on marriage equality. She voted ‘no,’ knowing that enough of her party would vote ‘yes’ to legalize same-sex marriage, while she could still face her conservative base and say “See? I voted ‘no’!”

AP.

However it got to this point, the Bundesrat is expected to approve the measure, and President Steinmeier is expected to sign it. We welcome Germany to the 21st century.

Now, Australia...

Can we look the other way, or forgive, when somebody does the right thing for a wrong reason?   Ideally I think the answer should be Yes, they did do the right thing.

Mrs Merkel seems to be rising to fill the vacancy as leader of the free world.  I like her, and obviously I like this news.

Just at the moment the politicians are trying to decide whether to vote same sex marriage into law, or hold a plebeciste. My guess is they will do neither.
