Out of the blue I have suddenly remembered a comedy routine by an American comedian who was touring Australia many years ago. I can't remember his name but I remember how cleverly he had latched onto the speech patterns of Australians. He had noticed our tendency to shorten words whenever we can and he came up with a routine that went like this:

An Australian friend of mine invited me to a barbecue - a barbie as you call it down here.

We were in Australia so it it was an aussie barbie

Actually we were in Brisbane so it was a brissy aussie barbie

It was Christmas time so it was a brissie aussie chrissy barbie

Naturally I brought a present - a brissy aussie chrissy barbie pressy

I think the routine went for much longer, but this is all I can remember. It is especially funny because a lot of Australians really do talk like that.
