On Sept 8, 1907, Pope Pious declared that modernists were "the most pernicious of all the adversaries of the Church ... Once indeed We had hopes of recalling them to a better sense, and to this end we first of all showed them kindness as Our children, then we treated them with severity, and at last We have had recourse, though with great reluctance, to public reproof."
So what had the modernists done to upset him so much?
Nothing apparently. The Pope was just pissed off that most modernists weren't falling for religious propaganda. He said, "Modernists place the foundation of religious philosophy in that doctrine which is usually called Agnosticism." (Oh the horror!)
