As you know, Trump has shut down the government so he can throw his tantrum over not getting his requested $5 billion to pay for the border wall. This makes very little sense, as Jimmy Dore has stated in several of his recent videos on the topic. Check the pinned comment, which I've quoted below.
Republicans had COMPLETE control of government for TWO years, and THEY didn’t pass a bill for a border wall, I wonder why that is? This is trump playing you, his base. Not plying to his base but playing them. How? By getting you to believe there is a “crisis at our border”, when none exists and then get you foaming at the mouth for a wall he didn’t even bother to try and build when he had complete control of government , nope, only when he knew the Democrats would block it did he then pretend to really want to get it built. If you believe that you’re a sucker. He wants to use the Wall as an issue to manipulate his base whenever needed, building it would take away his biggest talking point. FYI: two-thirds of undocumented immigrants entered the U.S. legally and then simply overstayed their visas. If you legitimately are concerned about the issue of undocumented immigrants, as opposed to just exacerbating and exploiting fearmongering for political gain, then this is where you would focus — not the border.
Now, didn't Trump promise during the campaign that Mexico was going to pay for the wall? When a reporter asked him this question, Trump insisted that Mexico would indeed pay for the wall, thanks to his NAFTA renegotiation. I looked into this more, and it broke the irony meter.
Look at the states Trump won. The top issues and concerns among the voters were immigration and jobs, both of which can be boiled down to NAFTA and its effects on American workers. NAFTA was responsible for job outsourcing, stagnant wages, and loss of worker's rights, just to name a few.
It turns out the original NAFTA was the principal driving force behind the great migration from Mexico, having so thoroughly ruined their economy that many were forced to move and seek work elsewhere. When Trump renegotiated NAFTA (now known as the USMCA) he kept it practically the same as before, except now it includes the worst provisions of the TPP as well. In other words, meet the new NAFTA, same as the old. So according to Trump, NAFTA is going to pay for the wall, which is intended to stop illegal immigration from Mexico, which was caused by NAFTA. Yeah, that makes perfect sense.
Why the hell not just get rid of NAFTA? Trump campaigned against NAFTA and the TPP after all. Oh wait, I know, it's because Trump can't go two seconds without contradicting himself.
