When polled for their opinions of the honesty and ethics of Catholic brand priests, only one third of Americans who are still suffering from Catholic-brand religious delusions think priests are trustworthy people.

The blatantly obvious question is an elephant in the room, why do the other 2/3rds still give money?

The proportion of US Catholics who regard priests as honest and ethical has plummeted to a record low of fewer than one in three

Do the other 2/3 attend confession and services?  Do they take Communion?  Why are they Catholic?

They dare not stop giving money - it's paying for their ticket into heaven.

I think it's deeper than that.  Do they want to admit -- to themselves -- that they were mistaken, all their lives?  That the shepherds were pulling the wool over their eyes?  That all their lives, they were being fleeced?  That the shepherds were dining on mutton and lamb chops?

I think we all know what else, shepherds do with their sheep.

Yes, that too.

That's why so many Christians stay with the religion after their "crisis of faith". They realise they have been sold a pig in a poke, but simply cannot admit that they were so easily fooled and so they double down and accept the whole shebang as absolute truth. As Tertullian said a few thousand years ago:

“The Son of God died; it is by all means to be believed, because it is absurd.

And He was buried and rose again; the fact is certain, because it is impossible”

(On the Flesh of Christ 5.4).

Why do the sheep feel safer with shepherds, than with wolves?

Real shepherds kill their sheep, eat their flesh and wear their skins.  If the sheep don't see what's going on -- it's because they don't want to see what's going on.

Psalm 23:  "The Lord is my shepherd........"

It's not just the priests.  It's God.
