Descriptive representation is nice and all, but substantive representation is more important.  It shouldn't make a difference if a person has the same religious beliefs, same skin color, same ethnicity, same sexual orientation, etc.  What matters in politics, above all else, is policy.

Ilhan Omar is a black Muslim woman.  She represents me in my opposition to the corrupting influence of lobbying groups, advocacy for Palestinian rights, and condemnation of the violent right wing Israeli government.

Tulsi Gabbard is a Hindu woman.  She represents me in wanting to end the wars, that the US should stop sending arms to Saudi Arabia, and the US has no right to enact regime change in Venezuela.

Bernie Sanders is an old Jewish man (yes he's probably an atheist).  He represents me on policy substance like Medicare For All, free college, a Green New Deal, ending the wars, ending the War on Drugs, and getting money out of politics.

It's also worth mentioning, there are some atheists whose political ideology I find abhorrent.

In large measure, yes.  At the same time, most politicians are still sucking up to the religious majority.  Way to many speeches end with God Bless America.  It's common wisdom -- and true -- that a lot of people won't vote for an Atheist.

Taking God off the money and out of The Pledge of Allegiance is not life or death stuff.  Neither are the Ten Commandment monuments in front of our Courts.  But until the Secular get organized and get tough -- we are not going to get any respect.

I'm reminded of this response Bernie Sanders gave four years ago when asked about his religious beliefs.

Which led many of his supporters, in the comments, to conclude that he's likely an atheist.

Yes.  At the time, I also concluded that Bernie was probably an Atheist.

Reports surfaced, that the pro-Hillary faction of the Democratic Party, were planning to use this against him.

I voted for Bernie in the primary and for Hillary in the general election.  I felt ill doing it, but in the end, it was her or Trump.

In my experience a high percentage of American Jews behave as atheists do, whether declaring atheism or not. By that I mean few Jews I've known or been related to were dogmatic or authoritarian.

I do have Jewish family members.

Bernie fits this stereotype I invented.

It's nothing that you invented.  The Jewish world has long had a sub-culture, that ranged from non-religious to anti-religion.  Much of it was Socialist.  The Yiddish theater had it's own Yom Kippur tradition.  The actors would publicly pick their teeth, during the time of the fast, so that everyone could see that they had eaten.

It's also the cultural tradition that gave us -- "There is no God and we are his people.".

My background.  It's what happens when people who can see reality, are stuck in a God centered culture.  I expect that you can relate.  Your culture hates you, just for being what you are.  Of course you can relate.  Sky Daddy hates you, also.  The bullies all insist on it.
