The nasty part, is he used to be a legitimate heart surgeon.

He had credibility.  He still has the credentials.  He sold his honor.

Popeye could be gross.  When I was a child, I had no idea at all of what he was saying; when he said -- "Well, blow me down."

Canned spinach is disgusting.  The fresh stuff makes a nice salad.

There was one episode that you might enjoy.  Popeye was helpless, so Olive Oyle ate the spinach instead.  Then she came to the rescue.

That video was a real eye-opener.

The situation is just as bad in Australia:

Last year a review into pharmacy in Australia recommended homeopathic

products be banned from sale in chemist shops across the country. This was

a sensible recommendation, given pharmacists are trusted scientists in the

community and science tells us homeopathic products simply don’t work.

In the government’s recent response to this review they “noted” the concerns

of the reviewer, and have chosen not to adopt it.

Yeah, I saw that.

Raw spinach in salad is tolerable, but still not a favourite.

Canned spinach is useful only after a zombie uprising when your other choice is cardboard for dinner.

Now fresh or frozen spinach is versatile.  I've been experimenting with soups based on pulses like lentils or beans. I think I'm going to try one with great northern beans and spinach. Then at the end the stick blender and we'll have cream of spinach and bean soup.

Throw it all in an Instant Pot, set the timer, watch baseball while your meal cooks itself. Oh, how I suffer :)

My local pharmacy -- (NYC) -- is a CVS.  I was in there last week, looking at the over the counter arthritis ointments.  One of them looked promising.  I was all set to buy it, when I looked closer.  Homeopathic.

They don't sell leeches.  Why Homeopathic?

I don't understand where there is room for ambiguity.  The Homeopathic capsules should be perfect, for a standard, double blind study.  Such studies are designed to remove all personal bias from the results.  It's like they never heard of science.

Fresh spinach is disgusting. I can eat canned spinach because it doesn’t taste anything like spinach.

If they are like other purveyors of pseudoscience that I have seen, they will reject the very concept of double blind studies, precisely because double blind studies don’t tell them what they want to hear.

I favor evidence based, objective reality, with as much true information as possible -- and as little false information as possible.  Certainly in regard to my own health care.

I understand the profit motive, in selling crap medicine.  I don't understand taking crap medicine.

Not everyone understands what makes a reliable epistemology. Perhaps most people don’t. How do you think most people stick so strongly to their religions?

People who take disproven crap medicine really do believe the shit works, and believe that their beliefs trump the methods used to verify claims.

It's like something out of Peter Pan.  If we believe real had and clap our hands, Tinkerbell will live.  It's the power of Clap.

Seriously.  Religion is partly to blame.  We are trained from childhood, that belief is more important than evidence.  More important than facts.  More important than external reality.
