Sam Harris on the Colbert Report:

I'm not convinced that Stephen Colbert is not really an atheist in Jeebustarian clothes.

Colbert is a satirist and a comedian, and a large part of that involves the willingness to make fun of nonsensical ideas that people believe in.  In order to accomplish that, one needs a certain degree of skepticism.  Obviously he knows his way around the arguments theists use, and has enough familiarity with their inherent flaws in order to lampoon them in his act, so yes, I'd say he's on the same page.  Based on what he said in that segment, and the fact that he even has Sam Harris on his show, he seems to be somewhere around deist / agnostic.

And you're only just now figuring that out? I think he does a great job of parodying his position. He makes fun of himself like no one else I can recall. Sam Harris did a damn good job of stating his case, too.

Somebody on a forum somewhere, possibly here, was insisting that Stephen Colbert is a devout Catholic. That is inconsistent with your observations and mine.

I had started with the idea that he was of the enlightened sort, it was only from the insistence of this person whose identity I can't recall that I had ever had any doubts.

I do like Mr. Colbert.  I'm featuring him in videos now in the humor section of my Anti-Corpo News site UnFoxNews.com

I consider people deeds over their words.

Colbert has had more atheists on his show than any other show, except for maybe Penn & Teller.
