Everyday I still check the boards at EA just to see what's news. Slowly I have watched as EA has slipped into a freeforall of porno spammers. Tonite I checked and there were 10 new posts. All porn. I am sorry to see it fall apart but I also knew it was going to happen. No administrator means no rules and the Mods they have are limited and just can't keep up.

I'd like to thank Steve for keeping on top of things here and providing us a place to vent, rage and laugh without all the spam and porn. Thanks Steverino! :snork_lach:

As far as the porn spam goes, it could have been cured by installing a mod or replacement forum software that requires a user to type the characters displayed in a graphic. This stops the spambots cold, so far.

Loss of interest in a web site by its owner is likely to lead to a major decline in both the technical and content realms.

And it is I that should be thanking you in particular, and all of our members, for helping create such a pleasant place to hang out.

Real human people are always going to be more interesting than spambots, especially the gang here.

Loss of interest by the webowner is definitely the root culprit.  But then it's compounded by the fact that even though the owner no longer cares, he hamstrings the interim caretaker in what he can and cannot do.  So on the one hand you have a "eh...whatever" attitude, but in the same breath its "not without my say-so".

That's the real shame.  You have mods and an interim admin who would love to solve the problem, but they are not provided the tools they need to succeed.  All friction with other members aside, THAT is the real reason the interim admin has become so disheartened and short-tempered.  He's like the manager of the KC Royals.  His owner is too cheap to spend on good players, but then he gets called to the carpet when they lose 100 games each year.

Eh, the spambots were the least of my reasons for leaving. I still check back every once in a while, and see that the members are still engaging in futile debate warfare with fundies and clinically insane people, thus generating 10+ pages per thread of arguments that fall on deaf ears (blind eyes?). I guess that's what floats their boats. Whatev. :smt102

Yes, EA has gone. I knew EA only for a short time, but they were good months. The first 4 were great but then a downfall came. Atheist arguing with Atheist, and then the porno came in.

That and the tinfoil hat brigade hasn't been banned yet, even though Carico was banned for the same reason: posting unscientific unsubstantiated BULLSHIT over and over again, and viciously attacking anyone who disagreed.  The militant fundy atheist crowd is still there, even though FritoBandito was banned for less, and I could swear I've seen those people advocating violence on numerous occasions.

EA doesn't care, and I suspect that some of the occurrences on the forum have only encouraged his lack of involvement.  If the forum gets hacked again, it'll probably be the end this time.

That's why I say how can you really be surprised when Dax has a meltdown?  Poor guy is like your big sister having to babysit you on a Saturday night, and you're sitting there the whole time in your ass-flap pajamas just waiting for your parents to leave so you can torment her all night, knowing she has no REAL power over you.  What's she gonna do....TELL?

That's Dax.  He gets to eat crap from 1500 members who want this and don't like that, but then if he tries to make a move, he's got EA lurking in parts unknown telling him he hasn't got the authority.  He can filter the porn with a 30 second fix, but EA won't let him install it.  So he lashes out.  I feel bad for him.  If EA is going to be gone 350 days a year, give the guy some teeth.  Don't make him sit there like a stooge.  Trust him to do the right thing, or don't trust him and pack the whole shooting match up and be done with it.

Seems to me this would be the right thing to do.

Yeah, I try to keep up with the spambots as much as I can, but I'm limited to library hours. I've sent PMs to EA, letting him know that this state of affairs is unacceptable, so if he ever shows up again, hopefull he'll get something done. For the time being I can only keep doing what I've been doing, and be glad I don't have Dax's job!

Here's the thing.  I know EA told me not to tell anyone, but I fail to see the harm in admitting this now.  Last year, after the boards got plagued by trolls, I was one of the members he offered a moderator position to.  However, I turned him down immediately.  Why?  A few reasons.  First, I didn't want the board to turn into one of those over-moderated police state forums, where the mods will censor anyone with an opposing viewpoint the way many Christian websites do.  A few mods is enough, I figured, and I trusted EA's judgment in selecting the other mods.  Secondly, I didn't think that I was cut out for the role.  I was concerned that I would end up acting inappropriately if someone pissed me off sufficiently.  On top of that, I didn't want to be viewed any differently from any other member.

I'd often gotten the impression that very few people had actually listened to what I had to say, or even took me seriously.  It's understandable, since many of my views are unpopular among the hardcore atheist or far left wing crowd.  I suppose part of why I left is due to this fact.  I'd say something to try and smooth things over, and everyone would just kind of walk away, or in worse cases, I'd get attacked for it.  Either I'd get ignored, end up killing the discussion, or make myself a target.

I didn't get to this point by conforming to the herd mentality, or by going along with what the mob dictates.  If my views make me an outcast, even among other atheists, then there's not much else I can say to mollify that.

D00d, your presence here tips the scale in favor of reason and logic often enough.  Besides when you are sarcastic you do it well.

And over at that other place you were often the voice of reason, even in the face of extreme conspiracy nuts.

That's odd? I always thought you were a voice of reason and moderation in a sack full of lunatics. You, Unbeliever, Steve and Seti always seemed to be the rational ones.

It's funny how we see ourselves, when we use the comments of others as our spectacles.

When Steve started this forum he made me a moderator and gave me all authority to swing the sword, so to speak. So far, I have never needed to even make a peep and I think that's a testament to the membership here. True, this site doesn't have the size that EA has to deal with but I think the many guests that have visited can see by our conversations that if they start any shit here, it will be dealt with very quickly and Steve has the interests to keep the spam at bay. This is a good place to live.

Wow!  Wow!   That's brilliant, what a thought provoking comment.

... and I think that's a testament to the membership here.

I think we're all pretty rational here - but maybe that's just by comparisan to the fundy pod-people.

Wow, UB.  You really blew it on this one.  How on Earth could you have a fundie emo-fest and leave out our good friend Joe Cool.  Good thing he's not welcome here to see how the shabby treatment you've given him.

For Joe!
