Of Sweat & Sin: Are Natural, Biological Reactions Sinful? Traditional Christian moral teachings portray lustful thoughts as sinful. This wasn't an innovation by medieval theologians, but can be traced back to teachings attributed to Jesus: thinking about doing something... http://atheism.about.../b/a/258776.htm

I remember this being discussed in religion class when I was a student at a Roman Catholic high school.  The boys and girls were separated.

All of the boys were at an age when certain areas of the body spontaneously received more blood flow at seemingly random times, causing, well, boners.

The priest, who was considered a total perv by all of the students, explained that when erections occur spontaneously it is not a sin as long as we do not enjoy them and try hard to think about something else, like penguins.  And of course in those days penguin was used to refer to a nun.  Nothing was less sexy than a nun.

On the other hand, if you touch it, rub it, enjoy it, or start fantasizing about sex without immediately applying the brakes and thinking about Sister Fossil Face, then you were a gol darn sinner.

So the Catholic position seems to be that it is possible to become aroused unintentionally, and that is OK as long as you immediately deeply regret it and are filled with shame.

Not that this would tend to screw people up in the head. No, no, no, no, yes.

This was the same pervo priest that told us if a boy is not attracted to girls it might mean that he has a calling to the priesthood.
