Atheist Congressman to come out of the Closet! On Monday, March 12, the Secular Coalition for America, a national lobbying group representing Americans who do not hold a god-belief, will make history by announcing the name of the first open nontheist member of Congress.Folks this is HUGE -- I have no idea who this is (well, I have an IDEA), but s/he is a hero to me, and is going change the future. This is so important, that I pledge $500 to the re-election campaign of this Congressperson, whoever s/he is. GOP or Dem, this person is getting money from me. I urge you to make the same promise, right here, right now.Keep your eyes on the NOGODBLOG for updates! http://www.atheists....me_out_of_the_c

I predict they already intend to retire.  Whoever it is, they will certainly receive death threats.

The death threats will not come directly from the God of Love, for obvious reasons, but they will come from one or more inDUHviduals that feel duty bound to act on behalf of their Imaginary Bearded Sky Daddy.

Boy, that brings to mind a wonderful film from 1967 called The Dirty Dozen.  Telly Savalas (Pvt Maggot) is visited in his prison cell by Lee Marvin (Mjr Reisman).

Maggot (justifying a murder):  I was directed by the lord.  I was in a state of grace.
Reisman:  Doesn't the bible say "Vengeance is mine, sayeth the lord"?
Maggot:  Ah...but you would limit him to the tools he would use?

Very timely exchange of quotes, no?  We are entering a time, if we are not already there, where entire populations could be at risk of a general/warlord/president who feels the lord has called upon him personally to do his righteous work, and will be all too willing to carry out His Will.

Christian terrorists, like Eric McMenemy don't get reported in the press, so most people don't even realize that there are such things as Christian terrorists. Of course, if they found out, they'd simply deny that the fanatics doing violence in the name of God are Christians at all, so you can't blame Christianity for their actions. But when theocracy threatens, we can't just sit back any longer, we've got to do something to mitigate the damage that Christianity is doing to our country. Electing leaders who are unafaraid, nay proud, to proclaim their membership in the Reality community is a good beginning, but we need to convince other politicians that coming out as atheists is politically sound, because the public can finally see just how full of shit the right wing God machine is. I hope I live to see the day when any religion is looked upon as a quaint holdover, an anachronism, an obsolete eccentricity that only the fringe elements of society still practice in secret, huddled by the twos and threes in their hideaways, fearful of public ostracism if discovered "worshipping" at an alter. Maybe you could sell "worshipping videos" on the Black Market, like we do with porn these days.
