I got this article in the NY Times Magazine.  I've read about halfway through it already.

Religion evolved in much the same was as our sweet tooth.  In harder times, when survival was a more desperate game, it would have been beneficial to seek out higher calorie forms of sustenance.  Now, in modern times, it's actually the leading cause of death, because too many people are overindulging as a result of it.  A little bit every so often is okay, and may even be good for you, but consume too much of it and you'll die.
